I originally used touchpad-indicator to automatically turn my laptop's touchpad off when a USB mouse was plugged in. However, it shows a little splash message which I find annoying and, furthermore, it seems to ignore my synaptics settings for some reason.
Since I only very rarely use my laptop without a mouse, I found it easier to register a hotkey in my window manager to quickly toggle the touchpad on or off. The hotkey is simply hooked up to the following very short bash script, which someone else might or might not find a tad useful.
- Download toggle_touchpad
In fvwm2, my key mapping looks like this:
Key F7 A 4 Exec $HOME/.fvwm/toggle_touchpad
